چکیده

Base metal smelting activities can produce acidic rain that promotes vegetation loss and the development of black coatings on bedrock. Such coatings can form over large areas and are among the most prominent long-term vestiges of past smelting activities. In this study, multispectral images derived from Hyperion reflectance data were evaluated with regard to their utility in the discrimination and mapping of black rock coatings near Sudbury. Spectral angle mapper (SAM) classifications generated on the basis of image-derived endmember spectra could not be used to properly identify major exposures of coated bedrock without also producing substantial confusion with uncoated classes. Neural network and maximum likelihood classifications produced improved representations of the spatial distribution of coated bedrock, though confusion between coated and uncoated classes is problematic in most outputs. Maximum likelihood results generated using a null class are noteworthy for their effectiveness in highlighting exposures of coated bedrock without substantial confusion with uncoated classes. Although challenges remain, classification results confirm the potential of remote sensing techniques for use in the worldwide detection, mapping, and monitoring of coating-related environmental degradation in the vicinities of base metal smelters.

Investigating Alteration Zone Mapping Using EO-1 Hyperion Imagery and Airborne Geophysics Data

Hyperspectral remote sensing records reflectance or emittance data in a large sum of contiguous and narrow spectral bands, and thus has many information in detecting and mapping the mineral zones. On the other hand, the geological and geophysical data gives us some other fruitful information about the physical characteristics of soil and minerals that have been recorded from the surface. ...

Role of smile correction in mineral detection on hyperion data

This work aims to extract the mineralogical constituents of the Lahroud Hyperion scene situated in the NW of Iran. Like the other push-broom sensors, Hyperion images suffer from spectral distortions, namely the smile effect. The corresponding spectral curvature is defined as an across-track wavelength shift from the nominal central wavelength, and alters the pixel spectra. The common “column me...

Analysis of Hyperion Satellite Data for Discrimination of Banded Magnetite Quartzite in Godumalai Hill, Salem District, Tamil Nadu, India

In order to determine mineralogy of rock and soil samples, reflectance and emittance spectroscopy in the near-infra red and short-wave infra-red is used extensively and found to be inexpensive. Hyper spectral remote sensing satellite data are found to be prospective to deliver in depth physico-chemistry like mineralogy, chemistry, morphology of the earth’s surface. Therefore hyper spectral data...
